Champions League is Leicester City’s to throw away, says Paul Merson

The Foxes beat Stoke City 3-0 at the weekend to go back to the top of the table.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12:30pm Saturday January 23, Paul Merson says the top four is now Leicester City’s to throw away.

The Foxes have been the surprise package of the season so far, with Claudio Ranieri’s side surging to the top of the table.

They had struggled in recent weeks, but returned to fine form to secure a win over Stoke City on Saturday afternoon to take them ten points clear of fifth placed Manchester United.

That gap puts them in a commanding position with 15 games left to go, and Merson says he now believes that a top four place is theirs to throw away.

“I think they’ve got to throw it away now,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“That’s ten points between fifth, on average it takes ten games to get that back.”

“Usually you watch teams and you think they’re going to get tired, but the energy they play with is unbelievable.”

If Leicester are to secure that Champions League place, there is no denying that duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy will be key, as they have been all season.

The pair had been out of sorts in recent weeks, with Vardy in particular having struggled to continue his fine early season goalscoring exploits.

But both were back to their best against the Potters, and Foxes fans will be hoping they can pick up their form again as they eye an unlikely top four spot.
