The Aston Villa winger is beginning to show what he can do more consistently.
While Aston Villa’s season has not gone according to plan there are signs of resurgence under new manager Remi Garde.
A 0-0 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend saw Villa avoid defeat for the third straight match and while that is a small mercy for a side rock bottom of the Premier League, it is definitely an improvement.
Of all the players who are beginning to perform for Garde, Spanish winger Carles Gil has been among the most impressive, and there is arguably just one thing stopping Villa from getting the very best out of the 23-year-old – a prolific striker.
While Villa have the likes of Rudy Gestede and Jordan Ayew on their books, they do not have a player who guarantees 20-plus goals a season in the top flight.
Such a thing is the Holy Grail of football but if Villa can find one there is no reason why Gil cannot go on to become one of their best players for many a year.
For now Villa have other things on their mind, namely clawing their way out of the relegation zone, but Gil’s upturn in form is a reason to be optimistic for the future.
If Villa do go down this season – and it is looking increasingly likely – Gestede could shine in the Championship as he has previously, and with Gil supplying the chances they could quickly return to the top flight.
Alternatively, if Garde can find the right target-man in the remaining days of the January transfer window, he could reap the benefits of playing in front of the tricky winger.
Gil has the ability; what Villa need now is a player to put the finishing touch to his magic.
