Alan Shearer reflects on Newcastle defeat, highlights a major problem

Newcastle United failed to build on their win against West Ham United and lost to Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.

Alan Shearer has claimed on that Newcastle United are lacking a goalscorer.

The former Newcastle United striker made the comments following the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat to Watford away from home at the weekend.

Steve McClaren’s side headed into the game at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon on the back of a 2-1 victory over West Ham United.

The performance of Newcastle against Watford was far from impressive, leading Shearer to criticise their recruitment in the summer of 2015.

“As for Newcastle, I saw them against West Ham the other week and it was their best home performance in a long time, but then they go back to their old tricks against Watford at the weekend,” the former England international has written on

“Newcastle have spent nearly 60 million in six months, and still haven’t got a goalscorer. Shelvey was brilliant against West Ham, he’s got ability, but Newcastle need to score goals, they can’t keep missing chances."

Although Shearer has a point about Newcastle lacking a goalscorer, perhaps it is not fair to criticise the club for not trying to sign one.

The Premier League outfit signed Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht in the summer, and the Serbian striker was expected to score goals.

Is it the fault of the Newcastle recruitment team that Mitrovic has managed to score just four goals in the Premier League?

Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez are also expected to score goals, but they are not doing so, at least not regularly.

It is easy to say that Newcastle need a goalscorer, but where will they get one from?
