According to Marca, Real Madrid have launched a formal offer for Schalke’s Leroy Sane.
The Spanish editorial lists Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona as fellow suitors yet it is Madrid who have apparently taken the initiative in the race to sign the talented youngster.
“Real Madrid do not want to pass up the opportunity, especially with Barcelona manoeuvring. Arsenal and Liverpool are also interested, but Real Madrid look to be best placed to snag the player,” Marca says.
Sane has risen to prominence in recent seasons and made a big impact last year when he featured during Schalke’s remarkable 4-3 Champions League victory over Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s top youngsters, scoring four goals and adding a further four assists in 11 league starts so far this campaign.
Schalke will be reluctant to sell Sane, yet Marca report that the full German international has a €39 million [roughly £29.5m] release clause in his contract which hasn’t put off Europe’s leading clubs.
Arsenal and Liverpool have long been linked with the star, and the Reds in particular have been cited as a potential destination for Sane following Jurgen Klopp’s arrival as boss.
However, the Premier League duo could ultimately miss out as Madrid step up their intentions.
The La Liga giants have been working hard on identifying Europe’s next best talents, such as Martin Odegaard, and they could see Sane as the ideal long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
