The 33-year-old thought he was going to join West Ham last summer.
The east London club's owners looked into the possibility of signing Barton but backed out of any deal when supporters made their feelings clear on the matter...
And Barton is quoted as saying by the Telegraph: "Getting back into the Premier League with Burnley was the plan. At the age of 33 you are probably only one bad injury away from being finished but I came here to go and play in the Prem.
"I thought I was going to play in it with West Ham but that fell apart and so I came to Burnley to do it."
As ever, Barton seems awfully confident in his own ability and believes he is good enough to play in the Premier League.
The Hammers certainly won't have any regrets over passing up the opportunity to sign the midfielder - and may in fact regret ever expressing an interest in him, such was the fan backlash the owners received.
But Barton could well be back in the top flight next season with the Clarets. Then again, so could Hull City, Middlesbrough, Brighton, Derby County and more...
