Report: Everton close in on Ajax defender Ricardo van Rhijn

The Blues are reportedly keen to add a full-back after missing out on Sam Byram.

Everton are closing in on a move for Ajax defender Ricardo van Rhijn, according to the Mirror.

The Blues are reportedly keen to add a right-back to their ranks this month.

Seamus Coleman is the undisputed number one in the team but, beyond that, there are few options for manager Roberto Martinez, with Tony Hibbert coming to the end of his career and Tyias Browning out injured.

They were said to have targeted a move for Sam Byram after agreeing a deal with Leeds United but the defender instead opted for a move to West Ham United, who can offer a better chance of first-team football (he has already made his Premier League debut after Carl Jenkinson came off injured against Manchester City).

That snub has led Martinez to turn his attentions elsewhere - and van Rhijn is thought to be top of his shopping list, with the Toffees eyeing a £2 million move according to the Mirror's report.

The Holland star has reportedly been on their shortlist for some time, with the Catalan boss having been torn between him and Byram before the latter's eventual move to Upton Park.
