Aston Villa player ratings v West Brom: Gil shines, Kozak struggles

Remi Garde's men dominated possession but had to settle for a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns.

Mark Bunn 6/10 – Didn’t have a single save to make but looked comfortable on crosses and impressed with his distribution. With the Lovre Kalinic deal falling through, he could be keeping the No. 1 job for a while.

Micah Richards 6.5/10 – Wasn’t as active going forward as expected but managed to keep James McClean quiet for most of the afternoon.

Jores Okore 7/10 – Had few problems dealing with Salomon Rondon, producing a match-leading five tackles and eight clearances to help preserve the clean sheet.

Joleon Lescott 7/10 – Strong in the tackle and dominant in the air, as his former club failed to register as single shot on target. Villa have now conceded just six goals in the seven games he and Okore have started together.

Aly Cissokho 7/10 – Solid at the back and had some good moments going forward. Bringing him back from Porto is looking like a smart move so far.

Leandro Bacuna 5.5/10 – Full of running but couldn’t pick out one accurate cross all afternoon. Wasteful with his shooting, too.

Idrissa Gana 6/10 – Not a flashy display by any means but was defensively sound and solid in possession. Still get the impression that he can offer a lot more on the attacking side of things, though.

Ashley Westwood 6.5/10 – Came close to scoring in the second half with one of his trademark long-range efforts and kept things ticking over in midfield with his neat passing.

Carles Gil 7.5/10 – Received plenty of rough treatment from Tony Pulis’ men but still managed to shine through as the game’s star performer thanks to his skill and composure the ball. Needed someone up top capable of finishing the chances he created.

Jordan Ayew 6/10 – Had a big penalty shout turned down midway through the first half but otherwise failed to trouble the Baggies much. Work rate over the past two months seems to be catching up with him.

Libor Kozak 5/10 – Effort was certainly there but struggled to make any kind of impact before going off for Gestede with 25 minutes left. Just doesn’t look sharp enough to lead the line at the moment.

Rudy Gestede (Kozak 64) 6/10 – Lasted just 16 minutes before being forced off with a suspected hamstring strain.

Jordan Veretout (Gestede 80) 6.5/10 – Produced some smart passes and useful set-pieces deliveries during his limited time on the pitch. Shouldn’t be out of the starting line-up for long.
