West Ham and Everton fans react on Twitter to Roberto Martinez's Sam Byram comments

Roberto Martinez says new West Ham signing Sam Byram was not right for Everton.

What a difference a week makes in football.

Last Friday at his weekly press conference, Everton manager Roberto Martinez was telling SkySports about how close the club were to signing Sam Byram.

The Toffees had just had a bid accepted from Leeds for the 22-year-old, and they were aiming to conclude a transfer the following week, having scouted him days earlier in the Whites' clash with Ipswich.

Byram ended up snubbing a move to Goodison Park, choosing to sign with West Ham United instead, and Martinez has expressed in today's press conference that Byram was not right for Everton.

A case of sour grapes? Decide for yourself. Here is a look at what he had to say, reported by The Guardian:

"In the end it was not the right move for Sam or the right player for us and that was end of it for us.

“I am pleased we were at the forefront of identifying a player but it was not for us. I can always give a correct path for a youngster to fulfil their potential but it wasn’t right to bring a young talent in for the sake of it. It was not right for him and it wasn’t a challenge he could embrace."

At Everton, Byram would have had a tougher task to crack the first team with Seamus Coleman established as first choice right-back, while West Ham's Carl Jenkinson is expected to return to Arsenal when his loan expires at the end of this season.

His comments certainly had West Ham fans chuckling...

Everton supporters had a mixed reaction to his comments...
