Newcastle United have been linked with a host of players.
McClaren was quizzed on Newcastle’s reporters at his press conference, but yet again the 54-year-old was not giving much away.
He did, however, confirm that Newcastle were busy on the hunt for new faces - as they look to ensure they have enough quality to avoid the drop.
“As I said, we know what is going on behind the scenes, unfortunately, we leave the media to speculate," McClaren said. "We have stayed quiet and it would be disrespectful to comment on any single player or club which is being speculated on.
“We are always busy. Everybody is busy in the January transfer window, whether that is keeping players. We have been linked with 40 players already in January. Behind the scenes we are calm and quietly going about our business and concentrating on Watford.
“January provides an opportunity, ten days to go and let’s wait and see.”
Newcastle have already brought in Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey in January, but they are eager to bring in more new players.
McClaren has been backed with funds, and West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino and Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend are still high up on his wishlist according to the Northern Echo.
Newcastle are keen to strengthen their attacking options, after struggling to find the back of the net over the first half of the season.
