Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (January 18) that Jonjo Shelvey will prove to be a good signing for Newcastle.
Earlier this month, Shelvey joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Swansea City for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.
“What he has got is an eye for a pass, he can split open a defence, he can score a goal,” said Murphy.
“He is very courageous on the ball, he will always want it, even when things are not going well, he will keep playing,” added the former Liverpool midfielder.
“He is not scared to make mistakes. And I think when you are playing up at Newcastle, you have got to have some courage up there.”
Shelvey made his debut for Newcastle last weekend, as he started the Premier League encounter against West Ham United at St. James’ Park.
The 23-year-old midfielder played for the entire 90 minutes last Saturday afternoon and gave a good account of himself, helping Steve McClaren’s side to a 2-1 victory.
The former Liverpool man took four shots, had a pass accuracy of 92%, created one chance, put in one cross, attempted two dribbles, and won 60% of his tackles.
Newcastle are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from 22 matches, just a point behind 17th-placed Swansea City.
