Tottenham are looking to sign a striker as back-up for Harry Kane.
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Tottenham star Clive Allen has shared his thoughts on Spurs’ search for a new striker, claiming that they need a forward similar to Didier Drogba in his last season at Chelsea.
When asked what kind of player Spurs need to sign, Allen said: “I think an experienced man, who will understand the situation, possibly sitting on the bench for most matches he plays. But someone who can come into the team if something unfortunate to Harry [Kane] happens. A little bit like the way [Didier] Drogba was used at Chelsea last season, in that he knew exactly where he stood [in his role to the team]. I think a player of his ilk would be fantastic, because in and around the dressing room as well he would help this young group.”
Mauricio Pochettino is looking for a new forward, hoping to ease some of the burden on Harry Kane by providing a second-choice striker.
However, whoever is signed needs to be well aware that they are only a back-up, and will spend more time on the bench than actually playing.
The striker needs to be experienced, a proficient goal scorer, and accepting of his back-up role at White Hart Lane.
This is why Allen says Spurs should look at someone like Didier Drogba, who in his last season at Chelsea last term was used as a back-up.
He provided experience in the dressing room, was happy to take a backseat role as a player, but still chipped in with a few vital goals.
He was the ultimate back-up striker, and Spurs should look to find someone of a similar ilk, to give Pochettino the most rounded squad possible.
