Newcastle are interested in signing Mamadou Sylla of Espanyol.
The agent of Mamadou Sylla has confirmed that Newcastle want to sign the young striker, telling the IBTimes that contact has been made between the Tyneside club and the forward.
Jordi Alburquerque said: “A group of intermediaries contacted me to let me know about Newcastle interest in securing his services. They said that Newcastle are willing to pay £1 million to sign him, but it is unclear if it will be to play for the first-team or to loan him straight away to a Championship side.”
It is stated that a £1.1 million offer was submitted, and that Espanyol were seriously considering the offer.
The 21-year-old has yet to score for Espanyol, but has a respectable record in front of goal for their ‘B’ side, and he managed three in 11 appearances during a loan spell with Racing Santander last term.
They view him as a talent for the future, but are ready to sell Mamadou if they get a bid which matches their valuation. It is not yet known whether the £1.1m bid matches the asking price that is placed upon his head.
Clearly the Magpies want Mamadou, and his agent has confirmed that the Tyneside club have made their feelings known.
However, they refused to reveal whether Mamadou was being targeted as a first-team player, or to be used in the development squad and loaned out to the Championship.
Given Newcastle’s current lack of a consistent goalscoring striker, if Mamadou does sign, surely it will be to take a place in the first-team.
