Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka has admitted speaking to Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin over a potential move to the Emirates Stadium, Torfabrik report.
The talented Switzerland international was doing an interview for the German publication and talked up the importance of his unique number 34, a shirt number currently occupied by Coquelin.
Asked what he would do if he were to join the Gunners, Xhaka says he has already contacted the French midfielder and stated Coquelin would be happy to vacate the shirt upon his arrival.
“At Arsenal Coquelin has it [the number 34 shirt]. And I've spoken with him, he says he would like to take another number [laughs],” Xhaka answered when quizzed on the Arsenal links.
The Gunners currently occupy top spot in the Premier League table and head into this weekend’s clash at home to Chelsea coming off the back of two difficult away games.
Arsene Wenger’s men may not have a better chance of winning the title than this season, and making a significant addition or two in the January transfer window could make all the difference.
Amid a host of injuries, regular holding midfielder Francis Coquelin has been side-lined for more than two months and his absence has certainly been felt against the likes of Southampton and Liverpool.
A quality addition to compete with Coquelin, or even partner him in the big games, is what most pundit and observers feel will get Arsenal over the line and Xhaka represents such a fine option.
The 23-year-old is one of the Bundesliga’s outstanding holding midfielders, averaging 2.3 tackles, 3.1 interceptions and 3.2 aerial duels won per league encounter.
