Liverpool legend Phil Thompson revealed on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (January 16) what Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has told him about Sunderland youngster Jordan Pickford.
Pickford, who is just 21 years of age, joined Preston on loan from Sunderland in the summer of 2015.
The young goalkeeper was expected to remain at the Championship club for the 2015-16 campaign, but he was recalled by the Black Cats last month.
“I was speaking to Chris Kirkland the other day and he was saying to me: this boy is incredible,” said Thompson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (January 16).
“He said: ‘Phil, I am telling you this boy can do everything’. We were talking about keepers who are good shot-stoppers, somebody who is good in the air but not great at shots, but he said this boy does everything good.
“He said he is going to be absolute star, he said he is going places. He was really waxing lyrical about him. He said he is a top-class goalkeeper.”
Pickford made his Premier League debut for Sunderland last weekend when he featured against Tottenham Hotspur.
The England Under-21 international started the game at White Hart Lane in North London and played for the entire 90 minutes.
The 21-year-old was quite impressive and made as many as eight saves, although that was not enough to prevent Sunderland from losing 4-1.
Sam Allardyce’s side are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 18 points from 22 matches, four points behind 17th-placed Swansea City.
