Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Thursday morning (January 21) that Andros Townsend would be a good buy in the January transfer window.
Townsend is on the books of Tottenham Hotspur at the moment, but he is struggling for playing time.
The England international has been able to make just three Premier League appearances so far this season and has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane in the January transfer window.
HITC Sport revealed on Wednesday that West Bromwich Albion are interested in the 24-year-old, but he wants to join Newcastle United.
Wilkins believes that Townsend would be a good signing and said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Thursday morning (January 21): “Andros is one of those lads that can win a game from nothing. He cuts in on that left foot, boom, and it is in the back of the net.
“He might miss the target 10 times, but he is one of those lads who can transform defence into attack with a belting run in no time at all. So I think Townsend would be a good buy for somebody.”
Townsend knows the Premier League inside out, but he is not good enough to play for a team aiming for a top-four finish.
Tottenham’s main objective this season is to claim a Champions League spot, and it is clear that the Englishman is not needed by head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
It would make sense for Townsend to leave Spurs and move to a Premier League side who are in mid-table or in the bottom half of the standings.
