Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (January 16) that Emmanuel Adebayor could be a good signing for Crystal Palace.
Palace manager Alan Pardew was recently quoted as saying by the club’s official Twitter page that he is interested in recruiting the 31-year-old striker in the January transfer window.
“If he plays, and he comes here and fancies it, he is better than anybody,” said Merson. “He is unplayable. He is big, he is strong, he is good in the air. He is quick, he scores goals. He is literally toss of a coin - what side he lands on.
“If he lands on the right side, you are going to get the signing of the second part of the season and everybody would be going, ‘why didn’t we get him’. Or it could go the other way.”
Adebayor is without a club at the moment, having left Tottenham Hotspur in September. On his day, the Togolese is superb, but can he do it on a consistent basis?
Palace are having a good season, but they do need a proven goalscorer to enhance their chances of a top-six finish in the Premier League.
While the former Arsenal and Manchester City striker knows the Premier League inside out, he has not played regularly for quite a while.
Adebayor could feature in just 13 Premier League matches last season, scoring two goals and creating 12 chances in the process.
Signing Adebayor would be a massive gamble for Palace.
