Fiorentina are stepping up their attempts to sign Mauro Zarate, report Tuttomercatoweb.

Zarate is into his second season at West Ham, and has made nine starts this season for the club in the Premier League.

It is claimed Serie A side Fiorentina want to sign Zarate on loan until the end of the campaign, with the option to buy him for three million Euros (£2.3m).

Tuttomercatoweb report that Fiorentina are hoping to conclude a deal this week for the 28-year-old.

What's in it for West Ham?

Unless Zarate expresses a clear desire to leave, there is not much reason for them to let him depart on loan, as he has been a useful squad player.

He has made a total of 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three times in the league, once in the Capital One Cup, and once in the Europa League.

A deal is however possible, co-owner David Sullivan told SkySports News HQ on Tuesday. He said: "I think it depends on the injury situation.Mauro wants first-team football, and he realises that if everyone’s available, he may be a little bit down in the batting order.

“So it’s just possible that we let him go, but at this moment in time we cannot let anybody go until we see our injury situation."

West Ham would surely only sanction a deal too if his wages were being paid, which would at least bring in a saving to the club which could be allocated for a loan signing of their own.

The Hammers currently have attackers Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Manuel Lanzini all out with injuries.
