Houghton said: “What happens if Villa go down, I suspect a lot of people will be looking at him. But wherever he gets his chance, be that at Villa or another club, he’s got to seize it. He’s got to really focus 100% on being a footballer. There’s been a few incidents off the pitch, but you’ve got to try and get your mindset right to be a professional footballer today.”
Grealish had many of Villa’s hopes for the season resting upon his shoulders before the start of the campaign, but he has failed to live up to expectations this year.
The 20-year-old has been in the press because of his private life rather than his talents on the pitch, and although he possesses a wealth of potential, it is already looking wasted.
Touted for an England call-up at the start of the season, Villa have lost every Premier League game he has been involved in this year, and is hoping to slowly rebuild his reputation under Remi Garde.
Houghton wants to see Grealish start next season, either with Villa or another team, with his mind 100% focussed upon his football.
The former Villa star does not want to see him waste his talent, and he has urged the youngster to get his mindset right to live up to his potential.
Houghton would not admit his faith that Grealish will still be with Villa at the start of next season, but wherever the playmaker ends up, he needs to start focusing upon his career to be the best player he can be.
