Pundit shares his concern about Newcastle’s Berahino deal, gives Townsend verdict

Steve Howey suggests that Tottenham Hotspur are still interested in the West Bromwich Albion striker.

Steve Howey has suggested to The Chronicle that Newcastle United could miss out on the signing of Saido Berahino in the January transfer window.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle want to sign the striker from Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion this month.

Tottenham have also been reported to be interested in Berahino (by The London Evening Standard), and former Newcastle defender Howey believes that the Magpies could lose the 22-year-old to the North London outfit.

“I’m not sure if the Tottenham thing is dead with Berahino yet though, that’s my one concern,” the Sky Sports pundit told The Chronicle. “I have no doubt the manager will be trying to get other people through the door though.”

The Chronicle has also reported that Newcastle are interested in signing winger Andros Townsend from Tottenham in the January transfer.

Howey believes that the England international would be a good addition to Steve McClaren’s squad and told The Chronicle: “If you can get Berahino and Townsend then brilliant.

“I like Townsend, he brings pace and creativity, and Berahino scores goals, that’s exactly what Newcastle need. It’s as simple as that.”

Townsend has been on the books of Tottenham his entire career so far, but he has found it hard to play regularly for the first team since last season.

The 24-year-old has managed to make just three appearances in the Premier League so far this campaign, creating only two chances in the process.

Berahino has not been playing well for West Brom so far this season, and has managed to score just three goals in 17 Premier League games.
