Remi Garde's men left it late to see off the League Two side 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay at Villa Park.
Late goals from Ciaran Clark and Idrissa Gana spared Aston Villa’s blushes on Tuesday night as they edged past League Two side Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay.
On a nervy evening at Villa Park, Wycombe came close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions either side of half-time through Garry Thompson, who headed over the bar following a Brad Guzan error just before the break and later sent another header wide on the hour when unmarked.
The visitors kept battling away but were eventually made to pay for failing to take their chances 15 minutes from the end when Ciaran Clark broke the deadlock with his own thumping header from an Ashley Westwood cross.
Substitute Idrissa Gana then secured the win in stoppage-time with his first Villa goal, driving home from the centre of the box after Rudy Gestede’s lay-off to set up a fourth round tie at home against Manchester City.
Remi Garde’s men are now four games unbeaten, but after another uninspiring performance against the Chairboys following the 1-1 draw at Adams Park earlier this month, the Frenchman was not rushing to praise his side at the final whistle.
“I was disappointed for the first hour of play,” he told Villa’s official website after the match. “I saw my team playing poorly technically.
“I am not happy about that - but I am happy about the result. We have to play better.”
