Everton were hoping to complete a deal for Sam Byram of Leeds United, but he has joined West Ham instead.
However, the Hammers made a late swoop for the right-back, and had their offer of the same value accepted by Leeds president Massimo Cellino.
In the end, Byram opted to sign for West Ham, and whilst no reasons were given by the player, it is clear why the move to East London made more sense.
The 22-year-old was born in Essex, making the Hammers his local team, and Slaven Bilic’s side are in a better position to offer Byram first-team football straight away.
Seamus Coleman is guaranteed first-choice right back at Everton, and Byram can stake a realistic claim for the starting right-back spot with West Ham.
Carl Jenkinson has not been playing well this season, and his loan deal with the club ends at the end of this term, meaning Byram is the long-term option for the Hammers in defence.
Following the confirmation of the news, Everton fans reacted to the transfer on Twitter, with many not too fussed at missing out on Byram as they believe Coleman is a better player.
Like we care about Byram.Seamus Coleman will always come first #EFC— Mair Bond (@MairBond) January 20, 2016
Glad Byram went to West Ham. He clearly doesn't have the character we want in our team if he doesn't feel he can compete with Seamus. #EFC— Andrew Pemberton (@A_Pembo1982) January 20, 2016
