The defender has recently signed a new deal at the Emirates.
The Spaniard signed a new three-year contract with the Gunners this week, with his new deal set to see him stay at the Emirates until 2019 at least.
The full-back has been impressive in Arsene Wenger’s side this season, continuing his fine form from last season to make the left-back spot his own.
And Smith has praised the defender, saying his new deal is good news for the club and the player alike.
“He’s been absolutely outstanding,” he told Sky Sports.
“He’s a really resilient defender; makes very few mistakes and positionally he has improved that side of his game. He’s one of those you can hang your hat on now. “
“It’s been a problem position. Kieran Gibbs has been around there for a number of years, but I think Monreal is a grittier defender than him. It’s [his new deal] a good deal for the club and him.”
There is no denying that Monreal is now very much a key player in this Arsenal side after it initially appeared he wouldn’t make the grade at the Emirates.
This season has arguably been his best yet, with a series of commanding displays as part of an Arsenal defence that has conceded just 21 goals in 22 games so far.
Gunners fans will be hoping that he, and the rest of the defence can keep up that record in the second half of the campaign, with a strong defensive record sure to be key to their to title hopes.
