According to a recent report in The Mirror, Liverpool made an approach for the striker, but it was rebuffed by Southampton.
Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes that the Republic of Ireland international would not enhance the quality of the current squad.
“Shane Long? Really?! No, no, no, no, no,” the former Tottenham Hotspur man told talkSPORT when asked about speculation linking Long will a move to Liverpool in January.
“There’s no point bringing in players who aren’t better than what you’ve already got. Would you suggest Long is a better player than Benteke? I don’t think so."
Long, who has been on the books of Southampton since 2014, has scored five goals and created 15 chances in 14 Premier League appearances this campaign.
Christian Benteke, who joined Liverpool from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015, has scored six goals and created 21 chances in 19 league matches this season.
Liverpool are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment, while Southampton are a point behind them in 10th.
