Charlie Austin rejected the chance to join Leicester City in favour of moving to Southampton, reports the London Evening Standard.

The Queens Park Rangers man completed a surprise move to the Saints on Saturday, with Ronald Koeman’s side paying £4 million to secure him in January instead of waiting for his contract to expire in the summer.

That deal has been widely regarded as a bargain buy for the Saints and it now transpires they weren’t the only side interested in signing him this month.

Leicester City were also keen on Austin and made a bid to buy him late last week, according to the London Evening Standard.

They reportedly saw the striker as a back up to current first choice Jamie Vardy, who has been in sensational form this season in their surprise surge to the top of the table.

Austin rejected the chance to move to the Kingpower Stadium though, as he felt that he had a better chance of first team football with the Saints than the Foxes.

His arrival on the south coast is sure to increase speculation about the future of Graziano Pelle, with the Italian having been linked with a return to Italy in the summer.
