Schmeichel says confidence plays a huge factor in a goalkeeper’s ability to perform and he feels Mignolet is being handicapped by pundits constantly looking to criticise and seek errors in his game.
“Goalkeeping is very, very much about confidence and thinking you are the man,” the Dane said.
“But, if every week, you are being questioned about what your performance was. If every goal conceded, [pundits are] looking for his mistakes, then you start believing in that.”
“I kind of blame you [Carragher] and Gary [Neville] for killing him on Monday night football.”
Mignolet has been the subject of heavy criticism from pundits over the past two seasons, largely as a result of a number of high-profile errors which have cost Liverpool at various moments.
Regardless of whether his mistakes have ultimately led to the criticism, Schmeichel has called for a stop and hints the Reds’ current number one would perform better for it.
Mignolet has just signed a new contract at the club, in spite of calls from supporters for the club to go out and buy a new goalkeeper either this month or in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp is seemingly fully behind the Belgium international, though his faith in his shot-stopper may be tested to the limit should the errors continue to occur between now and the end of the season.
The former Sunderland man has made 21 Premier League appearances this season, conceding 25 goals.
