The news was announced yesterday, with the Belgian stopper agreeing a deal until the summer of 2021.
Mignolet, 27, has made 122 appearances for the Reds since arriving at Anfield from Sunderland in the summer of 2013.
He was first-choice goalkeeper in the team who almost won the Premier League under Brendan Rodgers, but his career on Merseyside has become known for a catalogue of errors in a Liverpool shirt.
Countless mistakes have made Liverpool fans question Mignolet’s worth to the side, and although he regularly keeps league high tallies of clean sheets, his talent is doubted.
Despite fans not seeing Mignolet’s worth, head coach Jurgen Klopp clearly believes the stopper is good enough for a Premier League side, and the long-term contract extension is a real show of faith to him.
Following the confirmation of the deal, fans took to Twitter to react to the contract extension, with critics aimed at Klopp for his trust in the keeper.
I have no idea what Klopp sees in Mignolet that we don't— Haari (@AzzurriLFC) January 19, 2016
First disagreement just arrived with me and Mr Klopp, unless I have gone blind over last 3 seasons I am able to say Mignolet is second rate— Michael (@fisherthered) January 19, 2016
With these comments about Mignolet, maybe Klopp isn't as bright as we originally thought.— K Palmer (@DedHedRed) January 19, 2016
If Rodgers was coming out with these Mignolet quotes like Klopp is, he'd be hung out to dry. What is Klopp thinking.— Jay (@JAM_LFC) January 19, 2016
Please tell me how simon mignolet got offered a new contract please klopp get that piece of garbage out of our club #getmignoletout— Scotty bell (@Sc0tty_bell) January 19, 2016
Klopp must have agreed to the club offering Mignolet this decision already makes me doubt him! This shows nothing will improve— Junior DA WICKEDEST (@Junior_mafiia) January 19, 2016
Who offered Mignolet the contract? Klopp? The Committee? It just doesn't make sense.— I am Quäid (@alexcohen912) January 19, 2016
Mignolet is too bad for a 5 years contract very very wrong move by the committee and Klopp.— HandersonYNWA (@NtaniAli) January 18, 2016
Klopp walks in.. first big squad decision he makes at the club? Handing Mignolet a new 5 year contract. What a guy!— Sbs521 (@Sbs521) January 18, 2016
I just think Mignolet's new deal was wrongly timed. Klopp has it all to do in making him prove he's worth the extension. Mission on its own.— Nzumafor (@yanamaxjr) January 18, 2016
