Burnley midfielder Joey Barton said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning (January 16) that Jonjo Shelvey is a good signing for Newcastle United.
Shelvey moved to Newcastle from Premier League rivals Swansea City last week for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be £12 million.
“I think Shelvey’s the kind of player who would do well at Newcastle,” said former Newcastle midfielder Barton on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning (January 16).
“He is the kind of player who can be occasionally hot-headed, but he plays with a lot of passion and a lot of emotion.
"I think he is a player that Newcastle have been crying out for: somebody who can change a game from midfield. It’s a good piece of business for them.”
Shelvey made his debut for Newcastle at the weekend, as he started the Premier League encounter against West Ham United at St. James’ Park.
The 23-year-old midfielder played for the entire 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon and gave a good account of himself, helping Steve McClaren’s side to a 2-1 victory.
The former Liverpool man took four shots, had a pass accuracy of 92%, created one chance, put in one cross, attempted two dribbles, and won 60% of his tackles.
Newcastle are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from 22 matches, just a point behind 17th-placed Swansea City.
