Axel Witsel has been linked to Tottenham but he is not a player they need.

Zenit St Peterburg midfielder Axel Witsel has been linked once again with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Evening Standard report the Belgian international 'refusing to rule out' a transfer to the club in the summer.

In truth the player is hardly issuing a come-and-get-me plea. His interview is made up of several quotes skirting around his future, admitting Tottenham are an attractive option, but also admitting the Premier League in general is tempting.

Witsel is a fine player and would of course be an asset to Spurs, but not at the price he would command.

The Express reported earlier this month he has a £23 million price tag, and for a player in his position, Spurs do not need the expense.

Witsel is a defensive midfielder, but this is a position in which Eric Dier has blossomed this season, potentially saving the club millions.

Spurs also have Nabil Bentaleb waiting in the wings for a chance, along with England international Ryan Mason.

Quite simply, if the club are sanctioning the type of money required to go and get Witsel, it should be spent on a striker and an experienced winger, rather than a player who could hamper the development of their rising stars.
