Sheffield Wednesday have signed Joe Bennett on loan from Aston Villa, as confirmed by the official Owls’ Twitter account.
The left-back, 25, has agreed a loan switch until the end of the season, having spent the first half of the campaign with Bournemouth. He failed to establish himself in Eddie Howe’s team, failing to make a single appearance in any competition, and his lone game this term came as a substitute in Villa’s League Cup victory over Notts County.
He links up with Wednesday looking to compete with Daniel Pudil for the left-back spot, hoping to aid the Owls into winning promotion to the Premier League.
Carlos Carvalhal’s men currently sit in sixth place after 27 games, and Bennett should provide some extra defensive security to a team who have let in more goals than all their promotion rivals.
He is sure to be short of match fitness having not played competitive football for months, but when up to speed Wednesday have a talented defender on their hands.
Bennett has 125 games worth of experience to his name in the Championship, and has even played a full season of Premier League football.
His career has stalled recently, but if he can get back to his best with Wednesday, promotion will move one step closer for the South Yorkshire side.
Bennett can also play LM. Different option so we may see less of Helan coming on & wandering around looking lost #swfc— Iain Branson (@iainb79) January 19, 2016
Joe Bennett, open to a permanent move to Hillsborough. Barry Bannan instrumental in his decision to come, Hopefully is as equally good #swfc— SWFC Transfer Centre (@DanielLawton3) January 19, 2016
Don't get why we've signed Joe Bennett but I thought the same about Barry Bannan and look how that turned out #swfc— Jack Brown (@JackBrown829) January 19, 2016
Bennett is a great signing in an area that needed quality cover for pudil. Excited for the next 3 coming in now #swfc— paul thorley (@pthorley) January 19, 2016
Bennett will certainly want some game time whilst at #SWFC having played just 10 mins of competitive football since May.— Jonathan Buchan (@jonathanbuchan) January 19, 2016
Can't see anyone getting in over Pudil so I wonder if this Bennett is the "winger" we want, because it says he can play on the wing? #swfc— Jack Morton (@jack231997) January 19, 2016
