Alan Shearer has written on Coral.co.uk that he was impressed with Newcastle United’s performance against West Ham United at the weekend.
The Magpies returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over West Ham at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
Newcastle legend Shearer was impressed with the display of Steve McClaren’s side, and claimed that it was their best so far this season.
The former England international has also made a joke that the Magpies performed well due to the presence of English singer Ed Sheehan at the game.
“Newcastle turned on the style this weekend against West Ham for Ed Sheeran who was at the game,” the former Blackburn Rovers star has written on Coral.co.uk. “He performed at the Ball for my Foundation on Saturday evening and he wanted to come to the game.
“I thought it was without doubt Newcastle’s best performance of the season. It was a big three points. I’ll try to get Ed there every week now because they really did turn on the style for him.”
Shearer has also hailed Newcastle’s decision to sign Jonjo Shelvey from Premier League rivals Swansea City last week.
“Of those that have been busy in the window, Bournemouth and Newcastle look to be the two sides which have done the best business,” the Englishman wrote on Coral.co.uk.
“Bournemouth were lacking in goals and have brought in three good strikers to help fix that problem, while I really feel Jonjo Shelvey will prove an excellent acquisition for Newcastle. He had a really good game on Saturday on his debut for the club.”
Shelvey made his debut for Newcastle against West Ham and played an important role in the win.
The 23-year-old former Liverpool midfielder took four shots, had a pass accuracy of 92%, created one chance, put in one cross, attempted two dribbles, and won 60% of his tackles.
Newcastle are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from 22 matches, just a point behind 17th-placed Swansea City.
