It is just one game, but so far at least Jonjo Shelvey has surpassed expectations at Newcastle United with a man-of-the-match display on his debut.
He set up Georginio Wijnaldum for one of his team's goals in the 2-1 win over West Ham, and the Dutchman was full of praise for his new teammate.
The former PSV Eindhoven winger has told Newcastle's official club website he was excited about the prospect of Shelvey signing as soon as he heard it was a possibility.
He said: "I already knew he was a good player and from the moment I heard it was possible for him to join us, I was very happy.
"He is a great player. He is not someone who kicks and runs - he is someone who plays possession football and sees everything.
"You could see that from the two goals. He was seeing great passes, balls in between the lines, and he was magnificent."
Shelvey will need to show consistency to really earn the praise of being a 'great player', but his move to Newcastle might just be exactly what he needs to fulfil his potential, and his link up with Wijnaldum is one to watch.
He has a chance to solidify his England credentials and earn a spot at Euro 2016, but first and foremost his arrival can help propel Steve McClaren's side up the Premier League table.
