The Magpies could be given offers... they should resist.
According to the London Evening Standard, there is Premier League interest in Ayoze Perez from a club that Newcastle United want to sign someone else from. And there may well be interest from other top-flight sides, too.
That raises the prospect of a swap deal. But it's one Newcastle shouldn't entertain.
Indeed, whatever areas Newcastle need to strengthen in, there are few forwards that can give them what Perez does - if any. He's not worth sacrificing and, while the fans may know that, you never know what's being thought up in the boardroom at St James' Park.
The Magpies have already strengthened considerably in the transfer window and their pursuit of further additions could see the question of Perez's future raised.
The 22-year-old should be considered indispensable rather than as a bargaining tool.
Even in terms of sell-on value, there is far more potential there for Newcastle if the Spaniard stays on Tyneside.
While a potential swap deal for Andros Townsend or anyone else may sound appealing for some, then, it's an idea that should be batted away by the club if they want to show any sort of ambition.
