Steve McClaren explains Florian Thauvin decision

Florian Thauvin did not feature for Newcastle United against West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has explained to the Shields Gazette why Florian Thauvin did not feature against West Ham United at St. James’ Park at the weekend.

Thauvin was not in the Newcastle matchday squad, as the Magpies won the Premier League encounter 2-1, and McClaren has revealed that the 22-year-old winger was left out of the team because of an ankle injury.

“He had a little ankle injury,” the Englishman told The Shields Gazette. “He trained a bit (on Friday), but felt it. There was no point risking him, and it was good to get Rolando and Manu (Riviere) back involved.”

According to The Shields Gazette, Thauvin wants to return to Marseille in the January transfer window. The youngster moved to Newcastle from the French club in the summer of 2015, but he has struggled to make a huge impact at St. James’ Park.

The former Bastia man has created only five chances in 13 Premier League appearances for the Magpies so far this season.

Thauvin has a pass accuracy of 70% and a shot accuracy of 20%, and has won two headers, 11 dribbles and six tackles.

Newcastle are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from 22 matches, two points above the relegation zone.
