Graeme Souness says Olivier Giroud has proved him wrong this season.
The French international has scored 18 goals for the Gunners in all competitions already this season, and is showing why there was no need for Arsene Wenger to splash the cash on another striker in the summer.
Arsenal currently top the Premier League table, narrowly ahead of Leicester City and Manchester City.
Souness told the Sunday Times: "Olivier Giroud has stepped up to another level this season, too. I didn’t think he was capable of the second goal he scored against Liverpool on Wednesday.
"I didn’t know his feet were that quick. I have been critical of him in that respect, but he’s shut up a few of us this year."
Giroud was criticised by former Gunner Thierry Henry last season, with the current Arsenal ace telling The Mail in July he did not understand the reasons for this.
Souness meanwhile is not as high on German defender Per Mertesacker, going onto describe the centre-back as the team's weak link.
He said: "You’re only as strong as your weakest link and Per Mertesacker is Arsenal’s. He’s never been the quickest, but, at 31, relies on having a smart football brain and quick people around him, such as Bellerin on one shoulder and Laurent Koscielny on the other."
Mertesacker will really be put to the test next month when Arsenal take on Barcelona in the Champions League, but the game will also give him the perfect stage to too prove Souness wrong in his assessment of his abilities.
