Leicester took the lead through Shinji Okazaki in the first half at Villa Park and they were awarded a penalty soon after.
Mahrez stepped up to take the shot from 12 yards, but his effort was tame and Mark Bunn kept it out.
If Mahrez had scored, he would surely have sealed the three points for Leicester, but Villa ended up coming back to claim a 1-1 draw.
And Ranieri is now looking to swap his penalty takers, to take the pressure off the Algerian winger for the coming weeks.
CR: “Riyad was a little sad [to miss the penalty]. I spoke with him and I said 'come on man, even champions miss penalties.'” #LeiTot— Leicester City (@LCFC) January 18, 2016
CR: “I talked to him and said 'don’t worry, take a little break and you’ll have a chance to take them again.'” #LeiTot— Leicester City (@LCFC) January 18, 2016
CR: “I will speak with my players [about who takes penalties]. Last season it was Leo Ulloa who took penalties. I will see.” #LeiTot— Leicester City (@LCFC) January 18, 2016
Mahrez has actually missed his last two penalty kicks, but that has not detracted from the quality of the season he has enjoyed so far.
The 24-year-old has scored 15 goals in 25 appearances, and his form has been a major reason behind Leicester’s push for a top four spot.
