Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning (January 16) that he knew that Sunderland would recall Jordan Pickford from his loan spell at Preston North End.
Pickford, who is just 21 years of age, joined Preston on loan from Sunderland in the summer of 2015.
The youngster was expected to remain at the Championship club for the 2015-16 campaign, but he was recalled by the Black Cats last month.
Barton, now on the books of Burnley, has revealed that he knew that Sam Allardyce, who replaced Dick Advocaat as the Sunderland manager in October, would recall Pickford.
“He played against us when he was on loan at Preston,” said the Englishman on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning (January 16). “Preston beat us 2-0 at our place two months ago when he played in goal.
“The distance he kicks the ball is obscene. When I found out he was on loan from Sunderland and knew Sam had gone it, I knew straight away that Sam would take him back. There was no way Sam would leave him out.”
Pickford made his Premier League debut for Sunderland at the weekend when he featured against Tottenham Hotspur.
The England Under-21 international started the game at White Hart Lane and played for the entire 90 minutes.
The 21-year-old was quite impressive and made as many as eight saves, although that was not enough to prevent Sunderland from losing 4-1.
