Is soon-to-be free agent Shola Ameobi a viable option for Leeds United?

Shola Ameobi will be released by Bolton Wanderers at the end of the week, should Leeds United make a move?

Should Leeds United make a move to sign Shola Ameobi as a short term option until the end of the season?

Bolton Wanderers confirmed on Monday they would not be able to retain the services of the striker due to financial reasons, with coach Steve Walford expressing his regret at the situation at a press conference.

Ameobi may be 34-years-old, but has been useful leading the line for a struggling team and has shown he can still compete at Championship level.

The former Nigerian international scored on his debut for Bolton earlier in the season against Leeds United, and he is a potential short term fix for the club.

Leeds' lack of strength in depth up front has been evident with Chris Wood injured, while doubts remain over the future of Mirco Antenucci, with the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting interest from Italy with his contract up at the end of the season.

Ameobi would be a useful back up, and help protect the team from dropping further down the league, currently in 17th.

Leeds will have money to play with from selling Sam Byram, and it is sensible that this money should be spent on a striker, as a priority over a deal for Ameobi.

But it may be a viable option to bring the former Newcastle man in as well, to compete for places and provide an additional goal threat.
