Sunderland fans react on Twitter to Kirchhoff's performance against Tottenham

Stadium Of Light

Sunderland remain firmly in a relegation scrap after losing heavily to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Sunderland lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday to keep the Black Cats firmly ensconced in a relegation scrap.

Sam Allardyce’s side looked to have turned a corner with recent victories against Aston Villa and Swansea City but they came back to earth with a bump in North London.

Things looked very different when defender Patrick van Aanholt opened the scoring for the visitors with 40 minutes on the clock. But Tottenham wasted little time equalising through Christian Eriksen and further goals from the Danish international, Mousa Dembele and Harry Kane gave Spurs a comfortable victory.

Sunderland gave a debut to recent signing Jan Kirchhoff but on this evidence the former Bayern Munich man has some way to go before he is back to full match sharpness and ready to make a significant positive impact.

That is no surprise when you consider how long he has been out injured. However, Sunderland need players who can make a swift impact given that they are currently 19th in the table, three points from safety.

After the match we took to Twitter to see what Sunderland fans thought of Kirchhoff’s debut and you can read a selection of what we found below:
