Report: Newcastle to move for Stoke City's Mame Biram Diouf if Alexandre Lacazette bid fails

Newcastle United are keen to increase their options up front in the January transfer window.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are keen to sign Mame Biram Diouf from Stoke City, should they fail to complete a deal to sign Alexandre Lacazette.

Newcastle have made Lyon front man Lacazette their top target in January, and they have already had an offer rejected for the 24-year-old.

The Magpies intend to raise their bid to £25 million, which will reportedly meet Lyon’s asking price for their prized possession.

However, there is no guarantee that Lacazette will want a move to Newcastle, given Steve McClaren’s side’s current position in the Premier League table.

Lacazette has been linked with Champions League clubs in recent times, so he may reject a move to a team struggling to avoid relegation in England’s top flight.

If Lacazette does turn Newcastle down, the Magpies will instead look at signing Diouf from Stoke City.

The Senegalese international has dropped out of contention at the Britannia Stadium this season, but he has impressed in previous years.

Diouf scored 14 times in all competitions last campaign, but he has only netted on three occasions this time around.
