QPR had fought hard to keep Austin at Loftus Road, but with the striker’s contract running down they decided to cash in on him.
The 26-year-old completed a move to Southampton on Saturday and Hasselbaink says that Austin goes with his best wishes.
Just to clarify something Charlie Austin goes to Southampton with my best wishes. He asked to leave and I understand why the club sold him— Jimmy Floyd (@jf9hasselbaink) January 17, 2016
Austin’s departure leaves a huge void in QPR’s squad, given that he was the London side’s main goalscorer and excelled consistently at both Championship and Premier League level.
After joining from Swindon Town back in 2013 Austin has become Rangers’ talisman, and he had netted 10 goals in 16 games this season.
Austin also hit 18 goals in the Premier League last term, and there has been a great amount of interest in securing his services.
Southampton won the race for his signature though, and he will now compete with the likes of Graziano Pelle and Shane Long for a place in Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up.
