The Baggies faithful have been less than impressed with the 26-year-old lately.
As events transpired, West Brom's forwards failed to deliver, as the Saints showed exactly what they are capable of even without Austin.
Southampton beat the Baggies convincingly, putting three past them and not conceding anything, earning their second win in a row to put some of their recent poor form to bed.
Naturally, plenty of West Brom fans weren't happy with the 3-0 defeat, especially the performance of Salomon Rondon.
As the Midlands outfit's club-record signing, Rondon is under pressure to deliver. Against Southampton, however, he didn't. Supporters lamented his work rate and compared the money spent on him to some shrewder deals by Premier League rivals.
Tony Pulis's sides are often short of goals and they were again on Saturday. West Brom aren't in any immediate relegation danger but, if they keep producing goalless displays, there are no guarantees in the top flight. Here's how fans reacted on Twitter to Rondon's display - they certainly weren't happy...
Can't pick a MOTM from that. Saints strolled it. Rondon's heat map would be a single red dot 20yards from goal. Did he touch the ball? #WBA— Daniel Hewitt (@DanielHewittITV) January 16, 2016
From a man who scores two world class goals against avfc and then nets winner against the world champions to Lambert and Rondon. #wba— AnthonyS (@Anthony_JnS) January 16, 2016
12m for Rondon. Meanwhile 4m for Austin. Quite concerning. #wba— AnthonyS (@Anthony_JnS) January 16, 2016
#wba we had 3 strikers (Berahino Anichebe and Rondon) and still not a single attempt on target. Truly awful game, Pulis has a LOT to answer— Paul Gainham (@PaulGainham) January 16, 2016
Look at our current squad, then you think,we use to have these 3 as our strikers. Now we have Anichebe,Rondon,Lambert pic.twitter.com/WzilsD6hGB— Ryan (@RyanPGlasgow) January 16, 2016
