Former Arsenal midfielder Adrian Clarke said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on Thursday morning (January 14) that Everton defender John Stones is not the finished article yet.
“John Stones has got a lot of praise, hasn’t he?” said Clarke. “He has got an awful lot in his armoury, but decision-making… I still think he is far from the finished article. He still makes a lot of mistakes, in my view.”
Stones has been on the books of Everton since 2013 and is one of the best defenders in the Premier League. The England international, who is just 21 years of age, can play as a centre-back or as a right-back.
True, the youngster needs to work on his decision-making, but he has many features which other defenders of his age do not have. Stones is brilliant on the ball, makes timely challenges and tackles, and has good anticipation.
In 19 Premier League appearances so far this season, the Everton youngster has created one chance, has a pass accuracy of 90%, and has won 25 headers, 19 dribbles and 26 tackles.
Everton are 11th in the Premier League table at the moment with 28 points from 21 matches. The Merseyside outfit are eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently fourth in the standings and occupy the final Champions League spot.
