Steve Evans says Leeds United need a Matej Vydra this January, suggests Massimo Cellino is on the case

Leeds United are after a genuine number 10 option.

Leeds United have been linked with a move for plenty of players this month across various different positions.

One area that Steve Evans has made no secret of wanting to make an addition is in the number 10 role, as evident with the apparent recent approach for Tom Rogic of Celtic.

Speaking to the Noel Whelan show yesterday the Leeds boss went into more detail about the type of player he wants - even highlighting an example who he was keen to stress Leeds are not pursuing, Czech forward Matej Vydra:

"I think we are missing a genuine ten player. That one who can link that midfield (and attack).

"You know, not Vydra, but almost like a Matej Vydra type who can pull into those holes, pull into wide areas and suddenly create room and opportunities and who is very talented on the ball. Someone who unlocks defences."

Vydra, who is currently on loan at Reading from Watford, has developed a reputation as one of the better Championship performers in recent years and even won the Championship Player of the Season crown back in 2013.

So it is no surprise that Evans wants a player of his style and ability.

He even went on to hint that Leeds supremo Massimo Cellino is indeed pursuing a lead on such a player:

"That's the type of player we also need in to the football club and the president was deep in talks with a football club when I left Elland Road today, exactly a player who does that."

Again it cannot be stressed enough that Vydra is not in the crosshairs of Leeds United but a player like him, to play off of the attributes of big Chris Wood, could undoubtedly be a winning formula for the Yorkshire club.
