The midfielder has been in fine form in defensive midfield this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm January 16th, Phil Thompson has praised Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan’s performances this season.

The midfielder has been a mainstay in the side this season, having started in all of their Premier League games so far this season.

He has impressed as well, with his defensive solidity having proved the perfect counterbalance to allow the side’s attacking talents to flourish.

The role that he plays for the side is often overlooked, but Thompson has praised him for his displays this season, saying that he has consistently put in eight out of ten performances this season.

“He does his job, he knows his limitations and you get an eight out of ten every week from him,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“He knows what he’s good at, his manager knows what he’s good at and his teammates understand him.”

“I think he’s an absolutely terrific player in what he does, he’s not going to light up anything or scoring goals, but as a protection for the back four, he’s priceless.”

Whelan has certainly been impressive for the Potters this season, with his defensive solidity having been key to their success this season.

Mark Hughes side have conceded just 22 goals so far this season, the sixth best record in the division, only one more than title challengers Arsenal and Manchester City.

That kind of defensive record gives them a chance to win games and pick up points, and Whelan has been a key component to aiding that record.

His manager and his team will be hoping he can continue that form as they eye a European place this season.
