Former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet is up there with the Premier League’s best playmakers and has tipped the star for a big move this summer, the Daily Star reports.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson believes the French international is the best buy of the summer and will be astounded if he is still playing for the club next season.
“Dimitri Payet is some player. You can see why West Ham have missed him, he’s up there with Mesut Ozil for me,” Merson wrote.
“I’d be shocked if he’s still at West Ham next season because everyone will be in for him. He’s got it all. He must be the best buy of the summer window.”
“The challenge for West Ham is to go out and find one especially if he ends up leaving, because he’s had such an influence on them.”
“He scores goals, picks people out, takes people on, and his touch is brilliant. Whoever convinced him to join them needs a big pat on the back.”
Payet joined West Ham from Marseille in the summer, a deal which left a number of French observers and pundits questioning his motives as Marseille finished in the European places last season.
However, the Hammers have progressed immensely under new boss Slaven Bilic and they are now genuine contenders for a top four spot – proving Payet’s decision to join them was correct.
The 28-year-old has six goals and a further four assists in 13 Premier League starts this season, an illustration of just how important he is to the team.
It wouldn’t come as a great surprise if a number of so-called big clubs come in for him this summer, though considering his success the East London side will be well-positioned to slap a hefty price tag on his head.
