The Tottenham winger is seemingly on his way out of White Hart Lane.
Sky Sports announced that the two parties were in touch regarding Townsend's future - who is valued at around £14 million by Daniel Levy.
The report did however make it clear that no agreement was yet in place.
Contrary to what Don Hutchison clearly believes.
The former Everton and Liverpool player is from Gateshead and is a Toon follower and he sent out this not-so cryptic tweet last night that suggested Townsend will become a Newcastle player in the coming hours:
Next signing in for Newcastle (no names) but his surname starts with TOWN and ends with END— Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) January 15, 2016
If true it would conclude an exciting week for Newcastle United. The relegation candidates have already snapped up Henri Saivet from Bordeaux and Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City this week as they look to fight off relegation from the Premier League.
Townsend would add some real dynamism and width to their play if he did arrive and Newcastle fans will be hoping that Hutchison is right about the incoming nature of Townsend at St James' Park.
