Writing for BoyleSports, Stan Collymore has shared his thoughts on what Liverpool must do in the transfer window this month to given them the best chance of improving in the second half of the season.
When discussing Klopp’s transfer plans, Collymore said: “Maybe sell Benteke and Sturridge and finance a marquee striker. Two, not one central defender for me of real quality, sell Bogdan, demote [Mignolet] as cover and with the young academy recruits waiting in the wings to get their chance, I’d imagine we’ll see a much more consistent Liverpool next season.”
Collymore is keen to see a big name striker brought in as Liverpool's marquee signing, along with two central defenders.
The former forward has also indicated the goalkeeper position needs changing, with Adam Bogan sold and Simon Mignolet demoted to second choice, although he has not indicated whether a new keeper should be signed or Danny Ward gets the starting role after impressing on loan with Aberdeen.
Klopp has already signed one central defender, bringing in Steven Caulker on loan from QPR, although he is not a top quality player, and it is unlikely that he will be brought to Anfield permanently at the end of the season.
With this situation, Collymore still wants two more quality centre-backs, to provide cover and competition in a position which has proven extremely troublesome for the Reds in recent years.
A new forward is Collymore’s other wish, with Daniel Sturridge always injured and Christian Benteke not developing into a top class striker.
Klopp had success with Robert Lewandowski in Dortmund, and Collymore believes that a player of the Polish striker’s stature is needed at Anfield.
There are no indications that Liverpool are close to wrapping up any more deals yet, but surely Klopp’s signing of Caulker is only the beginning of his business this month.
