The Hammers recently beat Bournemouth and sit fifth in the table.
The Hammers are currently fifth in the table, and just a point outside the Champions League places, with Tottenham currently fourth in the table.
The open nature of the league this season though, means they are only four points from Liverpool, who currently sit ninth in the Premier League.
And Payet has warned that they could slide down the table just as easy as climb it, and must continue to work as hard as they have so far for the remainder of the campaign.
“We’re in a good position in the league now,” he told whufc.com.
“We're picking up points and when you win three on the spin you can rise up the table.”
“But we can slide down just as quickly if we're not careful! We have to continue working hard.”
While Payet has warned his side, he and the rest of the squad will be cautiously optimistic that they can finish in a European place this season.
They struggled over the Christmas period as a series of big injuries hit their side, but crucially managed to continue picking up draws to keep themselves in contention for a place in the top six.
With their stars now returning to fitness, they will be confident of picking up wins again and pushing even further up the table.
