The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at Parkhead, and now appears set for a temporary exit.
The 27-year-old was also being pursued by Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Championship side Hibernian (via Sky Sports), while The Scotsman claimed last month that English second tier sides Cardiff, Leeds and Bolton were also linked with a move.
However, it is Mixu Paatelainen's side that appear to have won the race to sign the former Sunderland forward. And having only made two appearances in all competitions for Ronny Deila's team this season, it is perhaps due to the Tangarines' desperate need for a spark of inspiration that Stokes has been tempted to move to Tannadice, as he is almost guaranteed first-team football.
Currently, United are well adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, having not won in the league since October. Paatelainen's men find themselves 11 points behind second-bottom side Kilmarnock.
But the arrival of a player with Stokes' goalscoring record may just be the lift they need to spark themselves into life, and perhaps put a run together that gives them a fighting chance of pulling off a miraculous escape.
