The 29-year-old has barely featured for Steve McClaren’s side this season, racking up just 108 minutes of Premier League football and playing for the full 90 minutes just once – in the League Cup clash with Northampton Town back in late August.
The Magpies have wasted little time strengthening their squad this month, bringing in midfielders Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey with more players set to follow.
With that in mind, getting some players off the wage bill is surely something the Newcastle hierarchy are considering; although L’Equipe claims Gouffran’s wages could prove a significant stumbling block.
The Frenchman has 93 appearances for Newcastle in total but with plenty of experience in Ligue 1 prior to his switch to England, it would be no great surprise if he headed home provided a deal can be agreed that suits all parties.
